SR-22 Insurance filed Electronically No car ? No problem!

What is a SR 22?

What it is.

A SR 22 is a financial responsibility filing with the state of Illinois that verifies that you have an auto or non-owner auto insurance policy with at least the state minimum liability limits.

How does it work?

Once you are required by the State to have an SR 22 financial responsibility filing, the documentation is filed with the state by the insurance company on your behalf. If your policy cancels due to nonpayment of premium, or by your request notification will be sent to the state by the insurance company stating that your insurance policy has been canceled, which may result in a drivers license suspension.

How long do I have to have an SR 22?

Although requirements may vary, most SR 22's are required for the length of three years. You can check with the State of Illinois Department Of Mandatory Insurance at  217-782-7065 to verify how long you will need the SR 22

How does electronic filing work?

Once in SR 22 is purchased will notify the state electronically, which the state will receive the following business day. However it may take the state up to three business days after receiving the SR 22  to activate it.

Illinois Licence Plate Suspension

In Illinois, a vehicle registration can be suspended for several reasons, including failure to maintain insurance, unpaid traffic tickets or toll violations, or other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code.

If the suspension is due to a lack of insurance, you must provide proof of current liability insurance to the Secretary of State. If you had no insurance you

must first purchase insurance then have your agent notify the state of Illinois, then in most cases pay a reinstatement fee of $100.00 plus a $2.25 processing fee if you use a credit or debit card to pay the fee.

To find out more information about the program or contact the SOS, please visit https://ilivs.com/Index_ILIVS.aspx or call the information line at 800-252-8980.

Other Common Reasons for Suspension:

Unpaid Traffic Tickets or Toll Violations: Outstanding fines, including parking tickets, tolls, or other traffic violations, can lead to a registration suspension. Other Violations: Depending on the severity, other violations of the Illinois Vehicle Code can also result in a suspension. Administrative Suspension: The Illinois Secretary of State can also suspend your registration for administrative reasons, such as failure to provide required documents or information.
